    Bentley is one of the premier luxury car companies in the world. This ultra-high class brand hails from England, where for decades it was part of the Rolls-Royce company. Bentley were initially known for their powerful and durable coupes and race cars, and they have gradually built upon this image to create some of the quickest and most indulgent luxury vehicles available. The company has rebounded from its status as a somewhat bargain-priced Rolls-Royce clone, having been purchased by Volkswagen in 1998 and given a fresh infusion of cash and engineering capability.

    The used Bentley lineup is composed a strong mix of coupes and sedans. The sporty Continental GT two-door coupe variants are also available in a convertible version, while the Brooklands coupe and Azure convertible present a more dignified option. On the four-door front, the Continental Flying Spur and the Arnage are available as two interpretations of the traditional Bentley image.

    W.O. and H.M. Bentley were brothers who were both addicted to the speed and thrills of automobile and motorcycle racing. While for a time they sold vehicles for French manufacturer D.F.P. it wasn t long before W.O. decided to strike out on his own and begin selling cars of his own design under the Bentley name in 1919. With customers demanding heavier cars with more ornate styling, Bentley was forced to develop ever more powerful engines to keep these immense hunks of iron moving. Their engine program eventually saw the company do very well at Le Mans and other race tracks, which helped to further the proliferation of the Bentley name around the world. The cost of these extensive operations took their toll, and Bentley eventually partnered with Woolf Barnato, an heir with seemingly bottomless pockets. Unfortunately, the company would fall victim to the Great Depression, a fate not even Barnato s money could stave off. Bentley would be purchased by competitor Rolls-Royce in 1931.

    Under the vision of their new corporate parent, the vehicles emerging from Bentley would bear a striking resemblance to the Rolls-Royce offerings of the day indeed, the vehicles frequently shared the same platform. More and more Bentley s were built alongside Rolls-Royces on the same assembly lines, by the same technicians, and the company s image began to dilute in the face of the similarities between the two brands. The 1950 s and 60 s did see a period where Bentley vehicles would impress the world due to their incredible speed and poise. However, at the same time the similarity to Rolls-Royce would increase to the point where only the body work could be considered different between models. The company s racing image faded into the past, and sales also began to drop off.

    Modern Day Bentley

    It wasn t until the 1980 s that Bentley began to see the light at the end of the tunnel in terms of rebuilding their brand image. While the company still had to deal with the fact that their vehicles were essentially badge-engineered Rolls-Royces, in terms of engine development Bentley was finally able to begin to pull ahead of their corporate twin. Turbochargers and large displacement engines began to produce enormously heavy sedans that seemed to possess almost supernatural acceleration. This performance momentum finally translated into a sales pickup for the company, and Bentley s began to outsell Rolls-Royces by a significant margin. BMW engines also began to take their place under the hood of the automaker s cars, furthering their overall technical sophistication. Bentley was purchased by Volkswagen in 1998, and has benefited from the financial and technical strength of their new parent company. Today the Bentley reputation has recaptured much of the original passion for beauty and performance that originally defined their vehicles.

    Finding the right balance between value and risk

    Two- and three-year-old used vehicles are often the best values. Not only is the price lower than a comparable new car’s, but continuing ownership expenses such as collision insurance and taxes are lower, and a two- or three-year-old used vehicle has already taken its biggest depreciation hit. In addition, buying used is a way to get a nicer car than you’d be able to afford new.

    But buying a used vehicle means finding the right balance of value and risk. Following are some issues to consider.

    Reliability. One thing that has made used cars more appealing is their improved reliability. In an analysis of Consumer Reports’ annual sub­scriber surveys over the past few years we found that five-year-old vehicles had one-third fewer problems than the five-year-old vehicles we looked at in 2007. Years ago rust and exhaust-system problems were common, but that’s no longer the case, and major engine and transmission problems have also decreased, making late-model used vehicles far less of a risk. When properly maintained, today’s vehicles should easily surpass 100,000 miles without a major overhaul, and many could reach 200,000 miles .

    Warranties and repairs. Although used cars are more reliable than ever, maintenance and repair costs are important considerations. In the first two or three years of a car’s life, it has fewer problems and is typically covered by a comprehensive warranty. An older used car, however, is usually out of warranty or close to it. You can expect not only more problems as time goes on, but more costly ones as the years and miles pile up.

    This means that owners will have to pay for repairs and for wear parts like tires, brakes and batteries. But even if you replaced all those things the moment you bought a used car, the savings over a new car would more than compensate.

    There is always the risk that you’ll buy a lemon. Even a car with a great reliability history can be a poor example, or have been abused, neglected, or damaged by a previous owner. By having the vehicle thoroughly inspected by a qualified mechanic, you can protect yourself against nasty surprises.

    Depreciation. A major disadvantage of buying a new car is its rapid depre­ciation. Models typically lose about 47 percent of their value in the first three years, com­pared with 24 percent over the next three. But this varies greatly among models.

    The BMW 328i. for example, has held its value relatively well (about 40 percent depreciation over the first three years), while the Lincoln MKZ has depreciated more rapidly (about 50 percent).

    Several factors determine depreciation, including the model’s popularity, perceived quality, supply, and whether or not the vehicle belongs to the current design generation. The average depreciation on a $27,500 vehicle leaves less than $15,000 ($14,575) after three years, a huge hit in residual value.

    Interest rates. Loans for new cars usually have a lower interest rate, but the difference is often not a major concern. In March 2014 the national aver­age for a 60-month new-car loan was about 3.11 percent, according to; a 60-month used-car loan was about2.80 percent. When rates are within just one percentage point of each other, the additional inter­est you pay on a typical used-car loan adds only about $7 to $15 to the monthly loan payment.

    Insurance. You’ll typically pay a bit less to in­­sure a used vehicle than a new version of the same model.

    Safety. Buying a used car means you might not get the latest safety features. Features such as electronic stability control (ESC), head-protecting curtain air bags, and advanced frontal air bag systems are hard to find on older vehicles. But ones such as antilock brakes, traction control, and side air bags have been commonplace for quite a few years now.

    UK car sales in 2013 recorded their best year since 2007, industry figures have shown, helped by cheap credit deals and stronger consumer confidence.

    That was a 10.8% rise on 2012, although the figure is 6% lower than 2007’s 2.4 million figure.

    Industry analysts say that attractive financing deals have tempted buyers, with three-quarters of sales to private buyers now involving some kind of financing package.

    Economic data in recent months has indicated that consumers are more confident. Analysts have also pointed to refunds from mis-sold payment protection insurance policies as helping to drive sales. Average payouts have been about £3,000.

    The 2013 total was boosted by a 23.76% rise in sales in December, marking the 22nd successive month of increases.


    The UK figures contrast sharply with the rest of Europe, where sales have tumbled in recent years.

    According to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association, figures for the 11 months to November show that sales across the region fell 2.8% to 11.4 million cars, putting it on track for a sixth straight annual decline.

    Full-year sales in 2012 fell 7.8% from the year before to 12.5 million vehicles.

    Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said: “With its best year since a pre-recession 2007, the UK new car market has helped stimulate the country’s economic recovery.

    “While the European market is only now showing signs of improvement, the UK has consistently outperformed the rest of Europe, with 22 consecutive months of growth.

    “The 10.8% increase in 2013 reflects the attractive financial offers available, as well as increased demand for more technologically advanced new cars. We expect new car registrations to remain stable in 2014 as customers return to a more regular replacement cycle,” he said.

    The SMMT figures confirmed that Ford was the UK’s top-selling brand last year, enjoying success with its Fiesta supermini and mid-sized Focus models, followed by General Motors’ Vauxhall Corsa and Astra models.

    The SMMT also said that one-in-seven, or 300,000, of the cars bought last year were built in the UK.

    Most cars built in the UK are exported.

    Last month, the SMMT said that car production in 2013 was likely to be at a six-year high with more than more than 1.5 million vehicles built.

    Growth was driven by the rollout of new models, including the third-generation Mini, the SMMT said.

    Thousands of new jobs were created in the industry as both Jaguar Land Rover and Bentley expanded their operations in the UK.

    Howard Archer, chief UK and European economist at IHS Global Insight, said: “The strong increase in private car sales in December indicates that demand for cars is holding up well despite consumers’ purchasing power being squeezed by inflation persistently running well above earnings growth.

    “The auto industry will clearly be hoping that UK economic activity holds up well through 2014 and beyond, and that this underpins consumer and business confidence and their willingness to splash out on new cars.”

    Finance risk?

    However, there was a warning that the car industry’s heavy reliance on luring buyers through credit deals could have a sting in the tail.

    John Leech, UK head of automotive at business services group KPMG, said: “The real story in 2013 has been the success of the Personal Car Plan offered by car manufacturers. Gone are the days where the consumer asks the bank for a personal loan.

    “Car dealers now sell finance with the car where half the price is paid over 36 months and the remaining half is cleared by a bullet payment at the end of the three years.

    “However, the danger for car manufacturers and used car dealers is that the supply of three year old cars is starting to ramp up and, maybe in a year or two from now, will exceed demand leading to a potential residual value price crash and increased risk of loan default by consumers.”

    UK new car registrations rose 5.3% in 2012 to 2.04 million – the highest level since 2008, according to the SMMT car industry body.

    Ford’s Fiesta and Focus, and Vauxhall’s Corsa and Astra were the four best-selling models.

    The Volkswagen Golf came fifth, with the Nissan Qashqai in sixth place.

    “Looking ahead to 2013, we anticipate the market will hold firm,” said the chief executive of the SMMT, Paul Everitt.

    “As we look to the year ahead, the real question is whether this demand will hold,” said Richard Lowe from Barclays.

    “Consumer pockets will continue to be squeezed,” he said, before adding that “manufacturers and dealers will have to be careful that supply does not outstrip demand”.

    ‘Offers and incentives’

    Last year’s growth rate was the fastest in 11 years, bolstered by a 106,346 or a 12.9% rise in demand from private individuals, who bought about 929,000 of the 2,044,609 units sold.

    Sales have fallen sharply across the rest of Europe, where the eurozone crisis and economic austerity have caused a great deal of uncertainty, so supply has exceeded demand.

    The new car discounts coincided with a shortage of used cars following years of weak sales. This pushed up prices and resulted in the price gap between new and used cars narrowing.

    In addition, older cars often cost more to run, insure and tax because they tend to have larger, thirstier and more powerful engines that emit more harmful gases. As a result, many buyers now feel new cars offer good value for money.

    The overall rise in registrations was the second annual increase since the start of the downturn in 2008, though the market remained 14.9% below its pre-recession peak in 2007, when 2.4 million cars were sold.

    In December, 123,557 cars were registered, 3.7% more than in December 2011.

    “December’s figures wrapped up a positive year for the industry, which saw consumer demand driving sales,” said Mr Lowe.

    In a statement, SMMT said: “Offers and incentives and some buyers shifting from buying used to new cars could have contributed to the upturn.”

    Rising prices for second-hand cars, which are scarce following years of weak sales, could also have contributed to a shift in buying patterns.

    “This stock shortage is a long term issue and is unlikely to change until new car volumes pick up significantly and the economy improves enough to generate a bigger churn of vehicles in the marketplace,” according to British Car Auction’s communications director Tony Gannon.

    If you’re taking your car to uni, forking out for car insurance can be costly. But there are steps you can take to keep those costs down.

    But you don’t need to commit yourself to a budget diet of just beans on toast just yet; as there are things you can do to make car insurance for students as cheap as possible without compromising on cover.

    As a group, students are statistically more likely to make a claim on their insurance than older drivers.

    This could be because students tend to be young people with limited driving experience and therefore more likely to be involved in an accident. Or, it could be because they tend to live in areas with higher crime rates and be more prone to theft or vandalism.

    But there’s no getting around it, car insurance is a legal requirement for all UK drivers – no matter how tight their budgets may be

    Adding older, more experienced drivers to the policy as named drivers can reduce student car insurance premiums, as the more drivers there are on your policy, the less time you’ll spend behind the wheel – at least in theory.

    However, you must never have an older more experienced driver ‘front’ your policy for you – but more on that in a moment.

    Pitfalls to avoid

    Setting up a policy on your car with someone else as the main driver and you as a named driver is a big no-no.

    ‘Fronting’, as it’s known, might earn you a much cheaper policy on paper, but it’s illegal and if you get found out the policy would be invalidated. Worse yet, you could find yourself facing criminal charges for driving while uninsured.

    If you’re only going to be using your car to visit home during the holidays, you might be interested in temporary car insurance cover, where you only pay for the weeks or months you’re using the car.

    However, you need to make sure you don’t fall foul of Continuous Insurance Enforcement legislation, introduced in 2011. Under the laws, you have to insure any car you own unless it’s officially declared as not in use with a Statutory Off Road Notice (SORN) from the DVLA.

    Anyone found with an uninsured vehicle not declared SORN can be issued with a fixed penalty notice of £100, and failure to comply could even land you in court and facing fines of up to £1,000.

    Auto makers posted modest gains in November U.S. auto sales as Black Friday deals against a favorable economic backdrop helped buoy a traditionally sluggish month damped by fewer selling days.

    Car sales are on track to reach their highest November sales volume since 2001, and analysts say that the month’s tally will indicate whether 2015 could set the all-time annual record.

    Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV sold 175,974 vehicles–its best November since 2000–compared with 170,839 for the month last year, a 3% increase extending the Italian-U.S. auto maker’s sales gains streak to 68 months. Jeep brand sales soared 20%, with the Cherokee, Compass, Patriot and Wrangler each recording their best November ever. The Dodge Challenger, Dodge Journey and Ram pickup truck also posted records for the month.

    Car-researching firm had projected a 3.4% increase for Chrysler.

    General Motors Co.’s sales rose 1.5% for the month to 229,296 light vehicles. Edmunds had forecast a 2.3% increase. Chevrolet truck sales rose 10%–the 20th consecutive monthly increase–while Chevrolet crossovers posted a 35% jump and the 12th consecutive monthly increase.

    Ford Motor Co. recorded a 0.3% sales increase, as F-series retail sales were up 16%. Edmunds was looking for a 2.6% increase.

    Nissan Motor Co. reported sales for the month increased 3.8%, as sales of crossovers, trucks and SUVs bounded up 15% to a November record.

    Car shoppers continue to drive away in larger, pricier vehicles amid low interest rates, cheap fuel and a stronger economy. Growth in November comes despite the month having only four selling weekends for the first time since 2012 and the fewest selling days of any month since 2013, according to J.D. Power. analyst Jessica Caldwell says car dealers in recent years have embraced Black Friday as a big sales driver and since 2010, November has brought one of the three best seasonally adjusted annual rates in each year, with Thanksgiving weekend raking in twice as many sales as any other weekend in the month last year.

    Those trends are expected to continue this year, and the U.S. auto industry could post its third-consecutive annual sales rate above 18 million units.

    WardsAuto is calling for 1.33 million light vehicles to be delivered over November’s 23 selling days–pushing the daily selling rate to a 12.1% improvement from the month last year. While new-product launches and inventory clear-out sales keep car segments in the black, light-truck sales are expected to boom 14.8% daily, largely on a lift from crossovers.

    WardsAuto’s forecast for an 18.4 million-unit seasonally adjusted annual rate would make November the highest month since July 2005’s 20.6-million and the first-ever three-month streak of 18 million-plus results.

    GM estimated the seasonally adjusted annual selling rate for light vehicles was 18.2 million units for the month.

    There s a wise old saying that reminds us a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. This is particularly true when it comes to car shoppers.

    You know the type. The customer strides confidently into your dealership armed with expert information about the value of the trade-in. Maybe he or she is clutching a printout from, or In short, the customer plans to dictate rather than negotiate what you ll give for the vehicle. So how do you deal with tough customers? And how do you use those pricing websites to your advantage?

    Turning perception into reality

    When the customer is fixed on the wrong value for a trade-in, it s up to you to shift his or her expectation back to the correct value. At this critical moment, you need information, not confrontation. The good news is that you have it at your fingertips, because you too can use the pricing websites the shopper visited to determine the value. But the difference is that you ll work with the shopper to help determine the true trade-in value.

    These Tricks of the Trade-In make it simple to put website pricing data to work for you.

    The appraisal

    Ask the customer to show you the car for an appraisal. Walk around the vehicle together, taking specific notes about the vehicle s condition, highlighting any flaws, dents or scratches. Once you clarify this vital difference, check off all the optional equipment for the vehicle and input the actual mileage. Also, make sure to check off everything that is right and wrong with the vehicle.

    The value

    As you input the information, Kelley Blue Book automatically calculates the vehicle s value under three ratings: Fair, Good and Excellent condition. In most cases, the customer rates the vehicle as Excellent, resulting in an inflated value. Very few vehicles are truly excellent. According to Kelley Blue Book, a vehicle has to be exceptional to be rated excellent. The body and interior must be free of ANY wear or visible defects. Good condition more appropriately characterizes most customer trade-ins. Kelley Blue Book states: A good vehicle will need some reconditioning to be sold at full retail price; however, any major reconditioning costs should be deducted from the value.

    By working with the customer to accurately input the vehicle information, together you will arrive at the appropriate vehicle condition rating and the most accurate vehicle valuation.

    Using these Tricks of the Trade-In allows you to reset the customer s thinking about the value of the trade-in. You included the customer in the process and used the pricing tools that he or she already trusts.
